The Simulated National Hockey League has been rocked by allegations of fraud today.
This comes as the Edmonton Oilers have claimed Scott Hartnell, currently a member of the New York Rangers organization, is in fact an Oiler. The Oilers lawyers have allegedly submitted documents to the SINHL commissioner that show a trade was agreed between the two teams on August 7th of this year. It is believed the trade involved several of Edmonton's players, including winger Todd Bertuzzi.
Edmonton only noticed something was amiss when Hartnell didnt turn up to training camp earlier this month. General manager Mitch Blake then contacted the New York Rangers at which point it came to light that the trade had never been registered by the SINHL. Both teams then spent the last few weeks gathering evidence and building a case, which they submitted to SINHL commissioner Anthony Wyng this afternoon.
It is expected that the league's front office will rule in favour of the Edmonton Oilers. This will come as a huge blow to the Rangers new general manager Stefan Aldrich as he had just named Hartnell his assistant captain. He had this to say:
Associated Press: "What do you think of recent events involving both Scott Hartnell and the Edmonton Oilers?"
GM Aldrich: "Well there isn't really much i can comment on. It's come as a huge shock to me as i fully expected Scott to be a big part of my plans for the foreseeable future."
Associated Press: "If indeed these allegations are true, and the SINHL rules in favour of the Edmonton Oilers, will you stay on as the Rangers GM?"
GM Aldrich: "I would rather not comment on my position until after the case has been resolved. Thank you and no more questions."
Clearly Aldrich is disillusioned with what has happened and is not happy with the Rangers board, including MSG chairman James Dolan.
What we have to ask ourselves is what happened here? Did the SINHL make a mistake in the paperwork, or was there some attempt of fraud on the part of the New York Rangers? Why had neither team come forward before this? Current suggestions point the finger at the Rangers previous GM Nate Bills, and the current Chief Executive Officer James Dolan. It is thought that after the trade was agreed, both Bills and Dolan realised they had made a mistake and in an attempt to rectify it, buried the paperwork.
If indeed the Rangers are found guilty, what will become of their future? Will Bills and Dolan be prosecuted? Will GM Stefan Aldrich stay on? Could the Rangers face some kind of a fine or punishment? Maybe even a ban? It seems that all this will depend on the decision of commissioner Anthony Wyang.
